Questions Your Must Ask Your Contractor5 Questions You Must Ask Your Contractor!!! 1. Does the Company Carry Insurance? A contractor should carry Liability and Workers' Compensation Insurance, to protect you in the event of a roofing accident. This can be verified by asking to see your contractors insurance certificates. If they can not show these to you, Do Not Use This Contractor! 2. Is The Company a Licensed Contractor? In the State of Maryland you must be licensed by the Department of Labor thru the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) to be a contractor. (Our MHIC # is 26976) 3. How Long has the Contractor Been In Business? Needless to say longer is usually better than shorter. Would you feel comfortable going with a company whose labor warranty is longer than the number of years they've been in business? Probably Not. Ask for referrals or references of previous jobs. Always Remember, Number of Years of Experience and Number of Years in Business is Not the Same Thing! 4. What is the Company's Labor Warranty? A contractor's labor warranty should be a minimum of One (1) Year. Yet the length of the waranty is less important than knowing that the contractor will stand behind their warranty. If a contractor has a Labor Warranty of 10 Years but has a bad track record of standing behind it, then their warranty might as well be 10 days. 5. Is the Company Local? Choosing a contractor who is local, helps with knowing if you ever need them for a warranty issue, they are close by. It's much harder to be at ease if the contractor is not local, if the contractor is from another state how certain are you they can handle your warranty claim quickly and effectively?
